Plan your storage space. Place items that you may need to access often in the front and allow for walkways.
CAUTION: Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (i.e. paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, etc.) Our regulations prohibit the storage of these items.
Use uniform size boxes or plastic storage containers for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-35 lbs. Don’t put too much in a box.
List contents of boxes on 3X5 cards and number boxes to match card numbers. Keep cards in a safe, convenient place for unpacking.
Wrap dishes/glasses/pictures/mirrors in paper and pack in sturdy boxes. Stack these boxes on top marked “FRAGILE.”
Drawers in furniture are storage for items that fit. Wrap them in table cloths, towels, etc. to prevent breakage.
Larger appliances make excellent “Packing cases” for blankets, towels, table cloths, and clothes.
Remove table legs to save space.
Store sofas/love-seats on end to save space. Place a protective cover over and under furniture. Wrap Cushions in plastic and place on top.
Plastic covers protect stuffed furniture from dust.
Store mattresses flat on top of level surfaces. Cover in plastic, stand on their side. Prop them up so they stand straight to avoid losing shape.
DO NOT store perishable items; flour, potatoes, candy, etc. or other food products.
Wrap stringed instruments in one or two blankets to insulate and protect. Also loosen the strings.
